A 22-year-old driver died Saturday night after crashing into a wooden utility pole on Tonnelle Avenue in Jersey City, police reports said.
A 1991 4-door white Honda Civic was driving south along Tonnelle Avenue near North Street when it swerved across one lane, mounted the curb and hit a utility pole head on, shortly before 9 p.m., police said.

The driver, Robert Castro, of Garibaldi Avenue in Lodi, was still wearing his seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
His passenger, 20-year-old Michael Carmody, of Troast Street in Hackensack, was treated for internal injuries at the Jersey City Medical Center after he was ejected from the vehicle and found several feet from the car, police said.
His status has been upgraded from critical to stable condition, reports said. Police believe Carmody was not wearing his seat belt.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation and no other vehicles are believed to have been involved, police said
