She battled nerves and self-doubt, sometimes put in 14-hour days and suffered through an occasional crying jag, but Ms. K is back.
A year after the Chicago Tribune profiled Cynthia Klaczynski on her first day of teaching, she has returned for a second year in the English department at Glenbard South High School in Glen Ellyn, a little more self-assured and still in love with her profession.
But it was not easy.
'The first year is just about keeping your head above water,' said Klaczynski, 24. 'There were days when my lessons failed miserably.'
